A Reasonable Response
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 12:1-2
e respond to the gospel with our lives
Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
“In short, once you have a good view of God’s mercy, anything less than a total, complete sacrifice of yourself to God is completely irrational! If you give yourself partially or half-heartedly, you are simply not thinking; you are not looking at what Jesus did.”
—Tim Keller, Romans 8-16 For You
We are transformed by the renewal of our minds

The Power of 4

- Bitterness in relationships drops 40%
- Alcoholism drops 57%
- Sex outside of marriage drops 68%
- Feeling spiritually stagnant drops 60%
- Viewing pornography drops 61%
- Sharing your faith jumps 200%

“To be transformed means to go above and beyond the forms and structures of this world. Christians are called to be light to the world, to be the salt of the earth, to show a more excellent way. This is not so much a call to drop out of society and culture, as a call to excellence, dedicating our lives to the glory of God.”—R. C. Sproul, The Gospel of God
Matthew 16:25
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

- What does it look like for you to offer your body as a living sacrifice to God? Give specific examples.
- Are there any areas of your life that you are withholding from God? Why is it hard to “sacrifice” them?
- Why do you think Paul calls responding to God in this way the reasonable response?
- What are some examples from real life of not conforming to the pattern of this world?
- How have you experienced God’s transforming you by renewing your mind?
- What are some examples of sacrifices that ended up being a complete blessing instead?
