A Series of Unfortunate Exchanges
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 1:24-32
Our unrighteousness makes our need for the gospel clear
—we suppress the truth
—we exchange the truth about God for a lie
The Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is sin
“In each instance where the Bible directly addresses homosexual behavior it is to condemn it. The consistent teaching of the Bible is clear: God forbids homosexual activity. Given what the Bible says about God’s purpose of sex and marriage, this should not surprise us.”
—Sam Allberry, Is God Anti-gay?
“I think it important to state clearly that we do, in fact, reject the straightforward commands of Scripture, and appeal instead to another authority when we declare that same-sex unions can be holy and good. And what exactly is that authority? We appeal explicitly to the weight of our own experience and the experience thousands of others have witnessed to, which tells us that to claim our own sexual orientation is in fact to accept the way in which God has created us. By so doing, we explicitly reject as well the premises of the scriptural statements condemning homosexuality.”
—Luke Johnson, Homosexuality and the Church
Homosexual sin is unnatural
“There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles; most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.”
—American Psychological Association
We should emphasize that the fall into sin affects not just our affections and our actions but our thinking as well. Human beings now have minds that are incapable of consistently thinking about divine things in an accurate way.
—Douglas J. Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans
Homosexual sin is an expression of God’s judgment
“God responds to people’s decision to exchange the true God for idols by condemning people to the consequences of the sins they have chosen for themselves. This giving people over is not an entirely passive matter—as if, as one commentator puts it, God simply ceases “to hold the boat as it was dragged by the current of the river.” Rather, we should view this action as a positive, judicial decision on God’s part, whereby he sentences people to the very sins they have chosen for themselves.”
—Douglas J. Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans
Homosexual sin is serious, but it isn’t alone
Homosexual sin is not inescapable
1 Corinthians 6:9–11
[9] Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, [10] nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. [11] And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Let’s submit all our desires to the Lordship of Jesus
Let’s love everyone like Jesus loves us without affirming sin

- How does it make you feel when you read through the list in Romans 1:28-31?
- How do we submit all our desires to the Lordship of Jesus?
- How can we love everyone like Jesus loves us without affirming sin?
