Advent: Love
God’s love for us
surpasses what we can understand. It is pure. Intentional. Active. Sacrificial. Unconditional.
// Agape love.
Our text this week, 1 John 4:7-12, gives us a picture of God's love for us.
God's love is...
...clear. God demonstrates His love for us in that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
...calculated.
Scripture tells us that He chose us before the foundation of the world. He has carefully orchestrated every detail and every step throughout history. God is always in control.
...costly.
At the cross, God poured all of His wrath out on His own Son. God Himself took our place on the cross and served as a propitiation for our sins.
When we think about the cost of our salvation, it should remind us of our value and of God’s unbelieveable love for us.
In his book, “Knowing God”, J.I. Packer said, “The measure of love is how much it gives, and the measure of the love of God is the gift of his only Son to become human, and to die for sins, and so to become the one mediator who can bring us to God.”
...complex.
God’s love for us is so deep and wide; multi-faceted beyond our comprehension.
Numbers 14:18 tells, “The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
...crucial.
We simply can’t do without God’s love. We have absolutely no chance of rescue on our own.
“The One who is love sent His Son of love to be a sacrifice of love so you and I could be rescued by His love and rest in that love forever and ever.” - Paul Tripp, New Morning Mercies
Because of God’s love for us, we have hope.
Christmas is a time to slow down and actively remember what Scripture says about God’s love for us…
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life…
...for God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” (John 3:16-17)
God loved us so much that He came to earth as a baby to live for us and die for us.
Our response must be to love Him in return. And when we love Him, His love spills out of us and to other people... all people, all the time.
