Because He Lives
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, April 9, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 7:1-28
Jesus is the true and greater Melchizedek
Hebrews 7:1–3
[1] For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, [2] and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. [3] He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
—He is both a king and a priest
—He blesses us
—He is the king of righteousness and peace
—He is our priest forever
Hebrews 7:15-17
[15] This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, [16] who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. [17] For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
Because He lives…
—He saves us to the uttermost
—He intercedes for us always
He saves and helps those who draw near to God through Him
“We are broken, sinful people who are separated from the holy God, and no ordinary priest, no earthly system, no animal sacrifice is enough to bridge that gap. What we need is the perfect Son of God, who became a human being, to represent us before God as our great high priest forever. Because of his perfect obedience and his indestructible life, we can have great confidence that our sins are forgiven, and therefore that we can “draw near” to God with confidence.” —Michael J. Hebrews for You
Because He lives
I can face tomorrow
Because He lives
All fear is gone
Because I know
He holds the future
And life is worth the living
Just because He lives
