Better Than Moses
Notes from Ky Martin's sermon on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 3:1–6
Jesus is Better than Moses
-Apostle: Represents God to man
-Priest: Represents man to God
*John 1:16–17 "For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
God is the source of everything
*Deuteronomy 8:17–18 "Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day."
God does reward our efforts, but remember He is the impetus of it all.
The church is the house of God
“The people of God who have been saved through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and have been incorporated into his body through baptism with the Holy Spirit.” (Definition by Gregg Allison)
The local church:
- are led by pastors (also called elders) and served by
- deacons,
- possess and pursue purity and unity,
- exercise church discipline,
- develop strong connections with other churches, and
- celebrate the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper,
- worship the triune God,
- proclaim his Word,
- engage non-Christians with the gospel,
- disciple their members
- care for people through prayer and giving, and
- stand both for and against the world.
If the church is the house of God. . .
Then church membership is part of being a Christian. The New Testament defines our identity corporately, not individually.
The church is where we commune with God.
1 Kings 8:27–30 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.”
The church has an outward focus.
1 Kings 8:35–36 “When heaven is shut up and there is
no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and acknowledge your name and turn from their sin, when you afflict them, then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk, and grant rain upon your land, which you have given to your people as an inheritance."
Discipleship Questions:
- In your own words, describe what Moses’s role to God’s people was.
- How was Jesus a better version of that?
- How would you answer the question: What is a church?
- How is the church similar to the Temple in the Old Testament? How is it different?
- How important is it that we understand church not as something we go to but as who we are?
