Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, November 24, 2024.
Sermon text: Haggai 2:20-23
Jesus gives joy to our longing hearts
Come Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in Thee
Israel's strength and consolation
Hope of all the Earth, Thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart
Jesus gives merit to meet our need
“In his circumcision, Jesus received the lawful sign of the covenant. In his presentation, Jesus was consecrated to God, as the law required. Then all through the rest of his life, he lived in perfect obedience to the whole will of God. He did this for our salvation. We are saved by Christ’s death on the cross, but we are also saved by his life on earth, in which he fulfilled all the righteousness that we owe to God.”
—Philip Graham Ryken, Luke
Born Thy people to deliver
Born a Child and yet a King
Born to reign in us forever
Now the gracious kingdom bring
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone
By Thine all sufficient merit
Raise us to Thy glorious throne
Jesus gives hope to all who believe
Jesus is God’s light to the nations. The whole world is covered with darkness through sin, but Jesus has come to dispel the darkness, to shine the light of salvation into every dark corner of every dim heart. It is because of him that we have a gospel we can take to all nations and offer to everyone. We can say to people, “Look, here is salvation. Jesus Christ is God’s light for the world. See him and be saved.” This was the sermon in Simeon’s song.
—Philip Graham Ryken, Luke
“We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first.”
