Daniel & Jess Allen
"Through it all, they re-taught us the truths we seemed to have forgotten."
Last week, Ryan challenged us to consider how authentic faith requires dependence on God and his people. This week, the Allens shared the story of their recent trials:
We have had our fair share of ups and downs throughout our ten short years of marriage. Through each season, we have been able to look back and see the community that the Lord brought us. They have held us accountable and have spoken hard truths, even when we didn’t want to listen.
This last year was no exception…
2018 was a dark season for our family. Graduate school. Unemployment. Scary things that we stepped into on faith, things that didn’t turn out as we had hoped or imagined.
Slowly, we began to doubt the Lord’s goodness, his faithfulness and his care. We were in the desert and we were wrestling the Lord.
But, our community was not swayed by our struggle.
They faithfully walked with us in deep and meaningful ways. Sometimes it was tangible - bringing us two week’s worth of frozen meals, keeping our children when we needed help, sitting with us as we questioned every part of our lives.
There were times when they were like Job’s friends, who just sat in the suffering with us. There were times they chased us down, like Hosea chased after Gomer. And there were times when they championed us like Paul, reminding us of eternal truths we had forgotten.
When we pushed them away, they waited patiently. When we reached out, they showed up. They spoon fed us the gospel when we couldn’t seem to reach the table.
Through it all, they re-taught us the truths we seemed to have forgotten. Our Lord is faithful. He is good. And He is worthy of it all.
