He Came to Seek and Save the Lost
Notes from Ky Martin's sermon on Sunday, November 26, 2023.
Sermon text: Luke 19:1-10
He came to seek and save the lost
- We must be aware of our need for Jesus
- We must be aware of others’ need for Jesus
- The little man’s curiosity is a reminder that some of the people who are secretly interested in Jesus are people we would never expect to be interested in Jesus at all. No one thought Zacchaeus had much interest in spiritual things, but in fact he wanted to know more about Jesus. -Philip Graham Ryken
- Jesus pursues His sheep
- Romans 5:7–8 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—[8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- “The changes that Zacchaeus made must have cost him a fortune, but then that is what it takes to pass through the eye of a needle” -Philip Graham Ryken
There were ninety and nine that safely lay
In the shelter of the fold,
But one was out on the hills away,
Far off from the gates of gold–
Away on the mountains wild and bare,
Away from the tender Shepherd’s care,
Away from the tender Shepherd’s care.
"Lord, Thou hast here Thy ninety and nine;
Are they not enough for Thee?"
But the Shepherd made answer: "This of mine
Has wandered away from me;
And although the road be rough and steep,
I go to the desert to find my sheep,
I go to the desert to find my sheep."
But none of the ransomed ever knew
How deep were the waters crossed;
Nor how dark was the night the Lord passed thro'
Ere He found His sheep that was lost.
Out in the desert He heard its cry–
So sick and helpless and ready to die;
So sick and helpless and ready to die.
"Lord, whence are those blood-drops all the way
That mark out the mountain’s track?"
"They were shed for one who had gone astray
Ere the Shepherd could bring him back."
"Lord, why are Thy hands so rent and torn?"
"They are pierced tonight by many a thorn,
They are pierced tonight by many a thorn."
And all through the mountains, thunder-riven,
And up from the rocky steep,
There arose a glad cry to the gate of heaven,
"Rejoice! I have found my sheep!"
And the angels echoed around the throne,
"Rejoice, for the Lord brings back His own,
Rejoice, for the Lord brings back His own!"
Discipleship Questions:
- Why was it so shocking for Jesus to befriend Zacchaeus?
- Are there people in your life who you assume are not interested in Jesus?
- How do you remember your need for Jesus’s saving grace?
- When you think of your own salvation story, do you imagine it in terms of Jesus chasing you down and rejoicing once He found you?
