How Much More
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, April 23, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 9:1-14
The old covenant through the law…
—was limited in its ability to grant us full access to God
—was ineffective in meeting our biggest need
Romans 3:20
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
The new covenant through Christ’s blood…
—secures our eternal redemption
—purifies our conscience
Spurgeon - the problems revealed by our conscience
—knowledge of past sins
—knowledge of our sinful nature
—ongoing contact with evil in this world
“Think of the most terrible thing you have ever done—the dark secret that haunts your nights, the great truth that if people really knew they would condemn you out of hand. God, who knows that secret and who does see that sin, has placed it upon his own Son so that you will not be condemned. “Therefore,” Paul concludes in Colossians 2:16, “do not let anyone pass judgment on you.” No, not Satan, not even yourself. You have been made clean by the blood of the Lamb.”
—Richard D. Phillips
—sets us apart to serve God
Questions for discussion:
- How did you realize that you could not make things right with God on your own?
- What does the truth that Christ has redeemed us mean to you personally?
- How does your conscience work against you to keep you from God?
- Read Romans 8:1-4 and discuss how it relates to this passage in Hebrews and this week’s sermon.
- How does a clear conscience (from Christ) set you free to serve Him?
