Loving Discipline
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 12:3-11
God disciplines His children because He loves us
—to correct us when we stray
—to train us in righteousness
“This is the ultimate reason, from our standpoint, why God fills our lives with troubles and perplexities of one sort or another—it is to ensure that we shall learn to hold Him fast.… God wants us to feel that our way through life is rough and perplexing, so that we may learn thankfully to lean on Him. Therefore He takes steps to drive us out of self-confidence to trust in Himself.” —J. I. Packer
God’s children see the purpose in His discipline
“In every trial, small or great: first of all and at once recognize God’s hand in it. Say at once: My Father has allowed this to come; I welcome it from Him; my first care is to glorify Him in it; He will make it a blessing. We may be sure of this; let us by faith rejoice in it.”
—Andrew Murray
Godly parents discipline their kids in order to point them to God
“It is hard, diligent, laborious work to rightly and lovingly care for your children through discipline. It is easier not to discipline children. Good parents discipline their children because they love them; they go the extra mile to rightly and carefully discipline them. They know what is good for them, and they know that discipline keeps them on the right path.” —Michael J. Kruger
Questions for discussion:
- In what ways have you experienced God’s correction?
- In what ways has God used trials and hardships to train you in righteousness?
- How can you choose to see the purpose in God’s discipline?
- How have you seen parental discipline point kids to God’s love and authority?
- How does the gospel help us understand and even receive God’s discipline with gratitude?
