Recipe for Peace
From Pastor Lance Shumake's message on Philippians 4:2-7.
Disagreements within a church are a threat to our witness and the mission of the church. So, it makes sense that unity is a big theme Paul stresses in Philippians, and it is a big deal for the modern Church, still.
Consider this passage to be a warning to us all! We cannot be known as complainers—we have to look for the ways God is moving and rejoice in those!
This also comes with a challenge: If we know someone struggling to be at peace with themselves or with another person, help them with reconciliation!
Ingredients for Peace
And we have everything we need for peace—not because we are awesome, but because of the work of Jesus.
2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.”
Directions
—Rejoice in the Lord
“To ‘rejoice in the Lord’ is to resist the instinct to focus on visible pleasures and problems. It is to concentrate our minds deliberately on treasuring the Lord Jesus Christ, to focus thought on his majesty and mercy, his purity and power, to ‘see and savor the glory of God in the face of Christ’ until our hearts are profoundly persuaded that he really is all we need in every situation.” —Dennis E. Johnson
Paul looks at circumstances from a God-centered perspective, so we must also look at
eternal
promises from God. Like joy—God promises us joy, and that is understanding God is in control and He is good.
This is a discipline, a pursuit, a meditation—we are to think on Jesus and find joy.
—Be reasonable and gentle
We ought to respond to everyone and every situation with reasonableness and gentleness because we trust what the Lord is doing in and through us.
—Do not be anxious about anything
This is a command—not a suggestion.
Paul is not talking about a chronic medical circumstance that is a higher intensity than the context of this verse. He is talking about a tendency to worry about everything in life. This reveals our misplaced trust by placing it all on us instead of God.
We know that God promises to work
everything
for our good, so we need a change of perspective.
—Pray about everything
—prayer
—supplication (posture of receiving help)
—thanksgiving
—requests (He is a good Father who gives good gifts to His children)
Instead of worry and anxiety, we should replace those with praying for everything. Literally everything. This causes us to capture thoughts and hold them captive in trusting the Lord.
Results
—Peace that passes understanding
This is a strong guarding of the heart and mind. Also, it is a promise from God.
Habakkuk 3:17–18,
"Though the fig tree should not blossom,
nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
and there be no herd in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD;
I will take joy in the God of my salvation."
