Struggling. Not Stuck.
Notes from Cole Edward's sermon on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 7:13-25
Sanctification is a battle
[Douglas Moo Quote]
Coming to Christ means, in effect, to experience a totally new change of status with respect to sin and the law. Neither has the power to dominate believers any longer. Neither determines our destiny. We are free from both, and this freedom was won through the work of Christ.
The battle is with sin not the law
Dead things can’t fight
[GK Chesterton Quote]
“A dead thing goes with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.”
Sin is no longer our nature
Our old nature celebrates sin
We don't celebrate sin, we lament it
[CS Lewis Quote]
No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is.
[John Newton Quote]
When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Saviour."
Fighting the battle
- Draw close to the light of God
- Don’t make provision for sin
- Remember that Christ has already won the war.
Discipleship Questions:
- Why do you think Paul is confused by his actions?
- How does violating the law when he wants to keep it indicate that the law is good? (v.16)
- Romans 13:14 says “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” What does it mean to make provision for the flesh? How can you make sure you’re not making provision for sin?
- In this passage Paul uses words like “flesh” (v.14, 18, 25), and “members” (v. 23) and contrasts those with “spiritual” (v. 14), and “mind” (v.23). What do you think is meant by the contrast?
- Read Psalm 139:23-24. Has God been convicting you of any sin in your life? How does knowing that you’re not stuck in that sin encourage you?
- How can you prepare for the battle, and how can you encourage each other when someone is struggling?
