The Danger of Drifting
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, January 22, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 2:1–4
Title: The Danger of Drifting
Warning
—be careful not to drift away from the truth
“There is no neutral position in the Lord. You are either becoming more like Christ every day or you’re becoming less like Him. That’s because whether you realize it or not, you’re never standing still.”
—Stormie Omartian, Power of a Praying Woman
—make sure you don’t neglect such a great salvation
What pursuits take up your time? Neglect looks a lot like following distractions rather than Jesus.
Encouragement
—pay much closer attention to the message of the gospel
“We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither this belief nor any other will automatically remain alive in your mind. It must be fed. And as a matter of fact, if you examined a hundred people who had lost their faith in Christianity, I wonder how many of them would turn out to have been reasoned out of it by honest argument? Do not most people simply drift away?” —C.S. Lewis
—give much more attention to the greatness of the gospel
This seems like a lot of "to do" lists, but really—when we are focused on Jesus and loving Him then the rest falls into line.
Discussion Questions:
Describe a time when you drifted away from God. What caused it? Why did you drift?
In what ways are you tempted to neglect the gospel and your salvation?
What are some things that help you pay closer attention to the gospel?
Instead of neglecting your salvation, how can you give much more attention to it?
How does the central truth that Jesus is better inform how you heed this warning from Hebrews?
