The Sharpest Word
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 4:12-13
Bibliographical Evidence
Plato 210 manuscripts 1200 year gap
Sophocles 193 manuscripts 1200 year gap
Homer (Iliad) 1757 manuscripts 400 year gap
New Testament 5795 manuscripts 30-150 year gap
NT (All copies) 25,000+ manuscripts 30-350 year gap
Internal Evidence
All known manuscripts when compared to one another are 98% in agreement.
When you look at the 2%, you find that almost all of those “errors” are spelling, punctuation, or light variations in word order.
Take those out and all the manuscripts are in 99.5% agreement.
Historical Evidence
Archaeology and history continue to prove the Bible to be accurate.
“The historical books of the Old Testament are as accurate historical documents as any that we have from antiquity and are in fact more accurate than many of the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, or Greek histories. These Biblical records can be and are used as are other ancient documents in archaeological work.”

Isaiah 55:10–11
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
