The Will of God
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, July 14, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 8:26-30
God will help us when we pray
“There is one in heaven, the Son of God, who intercedes on our behalf, defending us from all charges that might be brought against us, guaranteeing salvation in the day of judgment (8:34). But there is also, Paul asserts in these verses, an intercessor ‘in the heart,’ the Spirit of God, who effectively prays to the Father on our behalf throughout the difficulties and uncertainties of our lives here on earth.”
—Douglas Moo, The Epistle to the Romans
God will work in all things for good
—we can find gratitude in the good things of life
—we can find purpose even in the bad things in life
—we can find confidence in all of life
“The promise applies to “those who love God.” The phrase is emphatic in the Greek, and it should be prominent in our minds. This promise is specific, not universal. It is relational, not magical. It is for believers, not for those who have ignored or rejected the gift of salvation.”
—Daniel M. Doriani, Romans
God will conform us to the image of His Son
“God draws straight lines with crooked sticks, overseeing all events so that they bring good to those who love him. This does not mean that everything works out
as we wish. We may wish to be wealthy, healthy, and trouble-free, but God promises something better, that we will “be conformed to the image” of Jesus.”
—Daniel M. Doriani, Romans
For Those Whom…
—He foreknew
—He predestined
“It is abundantly clear that Scripture’s emphasis on God’s sovereignty never diminishes our responsibility. Instead, the two lie side by side in an antinomy, which is an apparent contradiction between two truths. Unlike a paradox, an antinomy is ‘not deliberately manufactured; it is forced upon us by the facts themselves … We do not invent it, and we cannot explain it. Nor is there any way to get rid of it, save by falsifying the very facts that led us to it.”
—John R. W. Stott, The Message of Romans
—He called
—He justified
—He glorified
