True Greatness
Summary of sermon on Matthew 20:17-28 from Pastor Ryan Lewis.
What do we think makes up true greatness?
Really, this is a message about pride and humility. In the previous chapters, Jesus predicts his death and resurrection. He was walking ahead of the disciples, sights on Jerusalem. But the disciples still didn’t get it:
Matthew 19:27—Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?”
They are still thinking of themselves.
The Peril of Pride
We see this same thing in Matthew 20:21 where the disciples desire personal greatness—they are full of pride.
“Pride is the great sin. It was through pride that the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every other vice; it is the complete anti-God state of mind.” —C.S. Lewis
“Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence on Him. . . Pride takes innumerable forms but has only one end: self glorification. That’s the motive and ultimate purpose of pride. . . to rob God of legitimate glory and to pursue self-glorification.” —C. J. Mahaney
This type of thinking leads us to asking what we will get out of a situation. But true greatness is not proud or self-seeking. Jesus flips this upside down.
Matthew 26:39b, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
“The point about pride is that each person’s pride is in competition with everyone else’s pride. That pride is competitive by its very nature. . . There is no fault which makes man more unpopular, and no fault which we are more unconscious of in ourselves. The more pride we have in ourselves the more we dislike it in others.” —C.S. Lewis
The Prescription for Greatness is Humility and Servanthood
John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
Practical Application Points:
- We place our faith and trust in Jesus
- We seek to serve
- This isn’t to see what we can gain from it!
- We live among Christian community
- This is to call us back from pride and danger of drifting
- We pray
