A Mountaintop Experience
Summary of sermon on Matthew 17:1-13 from Pastor Ryan Lewis.
We often have experiences where we feel close to God.
Matthew describes in this text an experience that Peter, James, and John will never forget. This story occurs six days after Jesus foretells his death. Peter, James, and John were the disciples that were with Jesus the most. Jesus took them up this mountain to pray and his true radiance was revealed to them!
Verse 2-3 says, "His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him."
We can see several observations in this text that give testimony to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The transfiguration reminds us that Jesus Christ is the Lord with us.
Verses 1-2 describes the literal transfiguration of Jesus. The transfiguration is similar to a metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is a change on the outside that comes from a change on the inside. The metamorphosis that happens with a caterpillar is natural whereas the transfiguration is supernatural. Another way to think about this text is that Jesus is crossing the line from what is natural to supernatural.
The transfiguration provides a glimpse of our need for transformation.
This tells us when we place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ that we should be transformed.
The transfiguration provides a glimpse of the coming kingdom of heaven.
One day we will see him in his full glory. There will no longer be a sun in the sky because Jesus provides all of the light!
The transfiguration provides confidence in the mission.
By revealing his glory Jesus was showing them who he is! This story gives us confidence in who he is too.
The transfiguration displays affirmation from the Father.
On a number of occasions in the Bible we see a cloud of glory protecting his people. In this case the cloud of glory announces the presence of God the father as he affirmed God the son. The disciples fell to their faces in great fear and Jesus came and touched them saying arise and have no fear. Then the transfiguration was over.
There are a couple things we can learn from this affirmation from the father:
(1) Listen
- If we are honest with ourselves we sometimes do more talking to God than listening. We can open our bibles and say God I am listening!
(2) Trust
- Our Bible is the living and active word of God and we can trust it!
"He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.”
— Hebrews 1:3a
