Losing is Everything
Summary of sermon on Matthew 16:24-28 from Brad Cardwell:
Jesus is using this passage as a wake up call to the disciples.
How you live matters, and if you are following Jesus then your life will be marked by denial of the self.
Does your conduct match your confession? Taking up the cross is a byproduct of that confession.
(1) Deny yourself
Only Christ can usher in the kingdom because only He is sufficient and worthy. This means taking our dreams, preferences, and desires and setting them aside. We are to affirm Jesus is sufficient and we are not.
Active (denial) versus passive (tribulation): denying the self isn’t taking hits because we follow Jesus, but rather an active, decisive move to consider the interests of others to benefit the church.
"In all my years of pastoring, I have learned this lesson: a person’s spiritual maturity is not truly visible until they DON’T get their way. Then you see the person.”
— Pastor Erik Reed
(2) Take up your cross
Lay your life down along with all that is precious in it. When was the last time I sacrificed the following for the benefit of the church?
- Time
- Comfort
- Money
- Convenience
1 John 3:16–18
"By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."
(3) Losing is everything
Do I view my life as how much I can keep or how much I can give away?
Is following Jesus convenient for you?
Have we planned out bite-sized “denials” to fit our overall desires for our life?
Does a teaching like this stir up devotion to Jesus and His kingdom or make you want to withdraw?
John 10:17-18
“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
