All Roads Lead to Romans
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Sermon text: Romans 16:25-27
Reflecting and Responding
We’ve seen the power of God to save and strengthen us
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Continue to go deeper in your understanding of the gospel
This epistle is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is the purest gospel. It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes.
–Martin Luther
We’ve learned how the gospel of Jesus makes us right with God
Romans 3:23–24
[23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Learn to preach the gospel to yourself
We’ve been brought into God’s plan to evangelize the nations
Romans 1:1–5
[1] Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, [2] which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, [3] concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh [4] and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, [5] through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations
Join the mission to point others to Jesus
We’ve beheld the wisdom and glory of God
Romans 11:33
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
Live your life for the glory of God
"The deep theology and practical advice found in Romans have as their ultimate purpose the glory of God. It is when readers of Romans seek to understand that theology and to live out its consequences that God is glorified. May each of us reflect this doxology as we read and live out the message of this great book of the Bible.”
—Douglas J. Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans
