Impending Danger & A Holy Response
Notes from Scott Sutton's sermon on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
Sermon text: Romans 16:17-23
1.) Smooth talkers will attempt to deceive the hearts of the naive.
- We'll explore exactly how to identify these people and study a few smooth talking heretics from church history.
2.) Mark those who cause divisions and create obstacles.
- pay attention to the their content first... just enough to know why it is wrong
3.) Avoid those who cause divisions and create obstacles.
- small talk is over... they get no air time... eliminate any ways that they might influence your family or church
4.) Be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.
Under this section I'm excited to introduce the book to the body that we are studying as a church staff... "Winning the War In Your Mind"... I'll share a few quotes and then read the section on pages 11-12 about how Satan looks for areas of our lives where we may believe a lie.
Discipleship Questions:
1.) How do we identify these people that we are to avoid?
2.) Have you ever encountered a smooth-talking deceiver in your journey of faith?
3.) Why should we "mark" them before we "avoid" them?
4.) In light of these verses, how can we explain to our children the importance of knowing good doctrine?
5.) What is 1 thing that you will do this week to help others know the truth?
6.) What are some real-life examples of being wise as to what is good? Innocent as to what is evil?
7.) What did you think about the quote from the book that describes how Satan tries to get us to believe lies?
8.) What kind of peace do you receive from God knowing that He will soon crush Satan under your feet? Where might that lead you to be more bold and intentional?
