"I was raised Catholic, so I had no idea what to expect."
We’d been visiting various churches in the area and were invited to Crosspoint by Tammy. My husband, Jason, wasn’t big on attending church as a family, so the girls and I began visiting. We really enjoyed the service and each of us felt like we connected well.
In fact, one Sunday, we were loading up in the car to come home and the girls said, “There’s that guy from church.” I turned around and To ny Fierro was running toward our car with his son. He said, “I just wanted to catch you before you left and invite you to our community group.” We talked for a bit and I told Jason when we got home that we’d been invited to attend.
Easter was approaching and Lance had challenged everyone to invite their friends to the service. We got home and Sophie, my middle daughter, walked up to Jason and said, “The pastor asked us to invite our friends and family to come to church with us on Easter Sunday and you’re part of our family and I want you to go with us.”
So, our whole family went to the service that Sunday where Jason met Tony for the first time. On the way home, Jason commented that Tony seemed to genuinely care about them.
We began attending community group too. I was raised Catholic, so I had no idea what to expect. But, it was obvious that Tony and Breann were humble, honest, caring and we felt very welcomed. In fact, I’m certain that if Tony hadn’t taken such an intentional interest in Jason, he wouldn’t have connected as well with the people of Crosspoint prior to his deployment.
Thank you, Tammy Harper Shumake
, Lance Shumake
, Tony, Breann Fierro
and so many others for “loving your neighbor” and going out of your way to help us connect to an amazing community. This village of people invited us in, befriended us, challenges us and cares for us in unbelievable ways and our lives have changed so much as a result.
