David & Goliath: The battle is the Lord's
Notes from Pastor Scott Sutton's sermon on October 16, 2022.
The story of David & Goliath is among the most popular Biblical narratives. And everyone knows that as we watch the young, ruddy, and handsome David march out there to slay that big mean Goliath, the main point is for each of us to be a David and slay our own giants… no, not really…
The importance of CONTEXT…
- Transition from priests to judges to kings…
- David and Goliath is really about David and Saul.
- Saul, though on his way out with a newly anointed King ready to replace him, would remain King for another 42 years until he died.
Main points...
- Long before David's epic battle with Goliath, God had been preparing and preserving a people for His own possession.
- David’s military insignificance is seen in his role of delivering “Charcuterie Boards”.
- God wasn’t there to help David win David’s battle, but to bring David into God’s battle.
- David was dependent upon God.
- David’s aim was the glory of God.
Application…
(1) Look to King Jesus, the Messiah and Christ, from the lineage of David.
(2) In Christ, YOU, the church, become a royal nation of priest-kings.
(3) The only way forward is complete dependence upon God, for His glory.
