Elijah at Mt. Carmel
Notes from Pastor Lance Shumake's sermon on 1 Kings 18:17-40.
If the Lord is God, we will follow Him alone.
Psalm 96:4–5,
“For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”
All the idols of our nation are worthless gods.
If the Lord is God, we will worship Him in awe of Him.
If the Lord is God, we will rely on Him through prayer
James 5:16–18,
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.”
“Let us be honest, though: prayer does not sound very exciting to us. We are ready to go up the mountain with Elijah, ready to confront the people of Israel, ready to mock the prophets of Baal, ready to see the fire of God, and ready to fall on our faces and worship God. Perhaps we are even ready to put sin to death. But are we ready to pray?” —Philip Ryken, 1 Kings
