God's Gathered People of Hope
Notes from Scott Sutton's sermon on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Sermon text: Romans 15:8-13
Two things to consider...
1.) God never promised us a church where nobody would hurt us
2.) Church hurt is part of our sanctification
Sometimes being conformed to the image of Christ means being hurt by the people you are
serving.
The Main Idea:
1.) Christ became a servant to the Jews (15:8-9)
a. To show God’s truthfulness
b. In order to confirm the promises of God
c. In order that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy
2.) God is gathering people! Don’t divide them! (15:10-11)
3.) The God of hope fills us with all joy and peace in believing (15:12-13)
4.) By the power of the Holy Spirit, you may abound in hope! (15:12-13)
“It looks like hope is both cause and result of joy and peace in believing…
Hope feeds on its own fruit.” - John Piper
Discipleship Questions:
- What does a hopeless Christian look like? What does a hopeless unbeliever look like?
- What did you learn from Scott's grandmother?
- How does "Christ serving the Jews" work to show God's truthfulness?
- How does "you serving others" work to show God's truthfulness?
- How does hope "feed on its own fruit"?
- How does preserving unity promote hope?
- Who are you praying to be gathered into God's people and filled with hope?
