The Gospel Advances
Notes from Stan Britton's sermon on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Sermon text: Romans 15:14-22
Romans 15:7-14
“The Gospel Advances”
Paul shifts his focus from theological education and interpersonal relationships within the Church to the mission of advancing the Gospel “to the ends of the Earth.” The diversion of the lines of Isaac and Ishmael in Genesis 18-21 are coming back together through the work of the first Century church and apostles.
12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac, 13 and I will also make a nation of the slave’s son because he is your offspring.” - Genesis 21:12-13
Faithful Biblical theology must include a passion for the unreached and the lost (Point 1) – vs 14-16 – Paul acknowledges the growth among the Roman Christians and their increase in understanding. His bold encouragement is to remind them of the priestly work of the Gospel. His wording is such that he regards preaching the Gospel tantamount to the OT priestly duties.
“The Gospel came to you on its way to someone else.” – unknown
A passion for the unreached and lost is born from recognizing what God has done for you (Point 2) – vs 17-19 - if we have knowledge but no passion, we appear aloof and selfish. If we have passion with no knowledge, we can appear foolish or misguided.

faith, and for the sake of the Name.” – John R.W. Stott
Discipleship Questions:
- What is your testimony? How would you describe what Christ has done for you?
- What are you doing to grow as a disciple?
- How is your growth as a disciple fueling passion for the unreached and lost?
- Are you actively focused on sharing Christ with people in your everyday life?
- What would make you more confident in sharing Christ?
- What is the name of one person you could share with in the next 14 days?
- As a CG, hold one another accountable for regular evangelism…
