In Every Season
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, August 27, 2023.
Sermon text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-15
For everything there is a season
“The story of my life has broken characters, jarring interruptions, unexpected joys and relationships caught up in unresolved tensions and difficulties. In God’s kindness I have, as yet, unfinished chapters. But my story is not the story. “The story reveals that there will be a time for judgment, and believers trust that judgment will finally prevail.” —Craig Bartholomew,
Ecclesiastes
In every season we can trust God
—He is the Creator
—He is in control
“Everything in this time-bound universe is under the authority of God in heaven. The sovereign God rules over time and over what happens in time: ‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.’ Nothing happens outside the will of God.” —Philip Ryken,
Why Everything Matters
—He makes everything beautiful in its time
—He doesn’t give us the whole picture
In every season we should fear God
Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Embrace every season with joy
Embrace every season by doing good
“Indeed, Jesus will come at just the right time, at the precise hour His Father has appointed. When that day comes time will be no more, and our deep longing for eternity will be satisfied. We will be with God forever. In the meantime, we are wise to pray the way that Moses prayed: ‘teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.’ —Philip Ryken,
