There Was Jesus
Notes from Ky Martin's sermon on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
Sermon text: Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:16
Five Struggles:
- Mortality (3:16-22)
- Oppression (4:1-3)
- Work (4:4-6)
- Achievement and Politics (4:13-16)
- Isolation (4:7-12)
Community is certainly better than isolation, but it is isolation that Qohelet has observed, so that his reflections on community intensify the problem of what he has seen rather than resolving it. -Craig Bartholomew
1 Peter 1:10–12 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, [11] inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. [12] It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Abandoned by God and people, Jesus made it possible for people to be in a right relationship with God and neighbor. From Gethsemane to Golgotha, a slow, sad separation occurred. Jesus was forsaken by Israel. He was forsaken by the Twelve. Finally, in some inexplicable way, he was forsaken by the Father—“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” - Douglas O’Donnell
