Jesus is better than angels
Notes from Ky Martin's sermon on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 1:4–14
Jesus is a better messenger.
- They valued angels to a fault, but Colossians 2:18 says, "Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,"
- They are greater than us in glory, but Jesus is the Son and has greater authority.
- They brought a message. Jesus was the message. They directed us towards the way, Jesus is the way. They carried the word of God, Jesus was the Word.
Jesus has a better message.
- By saying that Jesus is better than the angels, the writer is saying that the covenant Jesus mediates is better than the Old Covenant.
- 2 Corinthians 3:6-11 [6] who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (Shows us our need to be delivered)
[7] Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, [8] will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? Paul is making a similar point here… Even though he calls the Old Covenant the ministry of death,…
[9] For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. [10] Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it.
- If we understood how great and complete the mediation of Christ is, we would have no need for a go-between. We will never find a mediator better than Jesus.
- The payment was full. The work was completed. As simple as it sounds, the only thing left for us to do is trust and follow Him. We do not need angels or super christians or celebrity pastors to bridge the gap. We are seated with Christ. The debt has been paid. It is finished.
- The angles even envy us.: 1 Peter 1:12b “in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Jesus's message is final.
- 2 Corinthians 3:11 "For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory."
- This New Covenant is not step 2 on a way to steps 3 or 4. It is final. Why? Because what Jesus has done is so sufficient, so perfect, so final. so complete. Nothing can make it better or add to it. What we are looking forward to as we await the return of Jesus, is not a third covenant, but a consummation of the work He accomplished on the cross.
- In the new heavens and new earth, we will walk upon the streets of gold while standing in the forgiveness and righteousness that Christ purchased for us on the cross.
Discipleship Questions
- If someone asked you to explain what the Bible teaches about angels, what would you say?
- It can be tempting to fixate on things that are vague in Scripture, while neglecting commands that are more clear. Do you ever find yourself struggling with this? If so, explain.
- Do you ever struggle looking outside of Christ for mediation? If yes, what do you look to instead?
- Read 1 Peter 1:12. What do you think it means that angels long to see what has been revealed to us?
