Keeping Watch Over Your Souls
Notes from Brad Cardwell's sermon on Sunday, July 30, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 13:15-25
"What's unexpected about Christianity is that its hero doesn't risk all for the damsel [in distress] but for what the Bible likens to a harlot. Then he calls everyone that he saves to submit themselves to this same harlot, the bride still being made ready, the church" - Jonathan Leeman
It requires a lot of grace and a lot of accountability.
• Acts 20:28
• James 3:1
Elder: set moral authority, implies wisdom and experience, someone you would go to for counsel
Shepherd: lead from place to place, keep sheep from wandering
Overseer: watching over things and/or people, taking responsibility for outcomes
- Expect to be led well, biblically
- 1 Tim. 3:1-7
- Apply grace to your leaders
- Test and approve them
- Examine our preferences
- the more preferences the more opportunity for offense
- Enjoy your leadership
Discipleship Questions:
- What are some things that make submitting to leadership scary?
- What are things that make submitting to leadership beautiful?
- How is holding Elders accountable a means of grace?
- What are preferences we need to examine that might allow us to be hypercritical?
