Outside The Camp
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, July 23, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 13:9-14
False teaching is always a serious threat
Acts 20:29–30
[29] I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; [30] and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.
2 Timothy 4:3–4
[3] For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, [4] and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Beware teaching that mixes God’s Word with human wisdom
Beware teaching that boasts to have discovered what the church never grasped before
Does this teaching agree with the clear teaching of Scripture?
Does the teacher’s life bear good fruit?
Matthew 7:15–17
[15] “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. [16] You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? [17] So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.
Spiritual strength and blessing come to us by grace through faith in Christ, not by works
As we fully identify with Jesus, we will follow Him no matter the cost
1 Corinthians 1:22–24
[22] For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, [23] but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, [24] but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
