Look Back to Look Forward
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, May 21, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 10:26-39
Warning Passages in Hebrews
—Chapter 2 - we will drift away if we don’t hold fast to the gospel
—Chapter 3 - we will turn away if we stop trusting and believing God
—Chapter 6 - there are serious consequences when we fall away
—Chapter 10 - there is no hope for those who reject Christ
What this warning is not about
—struggling with sin
1 John 1:8
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
—besetting sins
This warning is about rejecting God’s authority and deliberately continuing in sin
—rejecting Jesus as the Son of God
—rejecting the work of Jesus on the cross
—rejecting the Holy Spirit who brought the gospel near
1 John 1:6-7
[6] If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. [7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Look Back to Look Forward
Remember God’s faithfulness
—in the endurance He gives us in suffering
—in the love and compassion He gives us for others
—in the joy He gives us despite our circumstances
Anticipate the reward God has promised
2 Corinthians 4:16–5:1
[16] So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. [17] For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, [18] as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
[1] For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Questions for discussion:
- How do the warnings in Hebrews give us a healthy fear that can keep us walking with God?
- What is the difference between struggling with sin and deliberately going on sinning?
- Describe a time when God sustained your faith through suffering.
- How does looking back at God’s faithfulness help you to look forward to His promises?
- How would it change your life if you spent more time anticipating God’s promised reward?
