Salvation For All
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 10:5-13
Salvation is accessible because of Jesus
What Moses had said about his teaching, Paul now affirms about the gospel. It is neither remote nor unavailable. There is no need to ask who will ascend to heaven to bring Christ down or descend to Hades to bring Christ up. Storming the ramparts of heaven and potholing in Hades, in search of Christ, are equally unnecessary. For Christ has come and died, and been raised, and is therefore immediately accessible to faith. We do not need to do anything. Everything that is necessary has already been done.
—John R. W. Stott, The Message of Romans
Salvation is possible only through faith in Jesus
—confess that Jesus is Lord
—believe the gospel
“Salvation is not a prayer you pray in a one-time ceremony and then move on from; salvation is a posture of repentance and faith that you begin in a moment and maintain for the rest of your life.”
―J.D. Greear, Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart
Salvation is available to everyone who calls on Jesus
Discipleship Questions:
- Why do so many people reject salvation even though Jesus has made it accessible to all?
- What are practical ways that you can confess that Jesus is Lord in your daily life?
- What is the difference between believing in Jesus and the way we normally use the word believe?
- How can we be a church that is known for welcoming and inviting everyone to believe in Jesus?
- How can you personally help us become a church like that?
