The Church on Mission
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
Sermon text: Romans 15:22-33
The church engages God’s mission by sending
“Any church not involved in the Great Commission has forfeited its Biblical right to exist.”
—Oswald J. Smith
“Whatever we do, we must not treat the Great Commission like it’s the Great Suggestion.”
—Charles R. Swindoll
The church engages God’s mission by giving
2 Corinthians 8:1–4
[1] We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, [2] for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. [3] For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, [4] begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints
2 Corinthians 9:6–7
[6] The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [7] Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
The church engages God’s mission by praying
Matthew 9:36–38
[36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. [37] Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; [38] therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
“The history of missions is the history of answered prayer.”
–Samuel Zwemer
Discipleship Questions:
- What are some ways our church is and can be fully engaged in sending?
- How can we as church members support the sending work of the church?
- How can missions inspire us to be more generous?
- What would it look like for us to strive together in prayer with those we have sent?
- What are ways we can become more devoted to prayer as a church?
- Spend some time praying and striving together as a CG. Pray for our missionary partners, pray for our local partners, pray for our church to be fully engaged in the Great Commission.
