The Law of Love
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Sermon text: Romans 13:8-14
Love is a debt we never pay off
Our obligation to love one another is a debt that can never be repaid. It always remains outstanding. We can never love enough. God will always be bringing new people into our lives whom we are called to love, and there are those people we have known for a long time whom we are called to love in new ways as they go through the ups and downs of life.
—Douglas J. Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans
Love is fulfilling the law
Matthew 22:36–40
[36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
“Love is the essence of the Christian ethic. It is so important, so fundamental, that it can take the place of all the other commandments in the law about our relationships with other human beings.”
—Douglas J. Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans
Love is actively doing good and not doing harm to others
Love is an urgent need in our world
Romans 13 began with important teaching about how we can be good citizens and good neighbors; it ends with why we should be. There is no greater incentive to the doing of these duties than a lively expectation of the Lord’s return.
—John R. W. Stott, The Message of Romans
