Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, July 16, 2023.
Sermon text: Hebrews 13:1-8
Remember to love one another
John 13:34–35
[34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. [35] By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
—show hospitality to all
“Let God use your home, apartment, dorm room, front yard, community gymnasium, or garden for the purpose of making strangers into neighbors and neighbors into family. Because that is the point—building the church and living like a family, the family of God.”
—Rosaria Butterfield, The Gospel Comes With a House Key
—care for the mistreated
Remember to pursue holiness
—uphold and protect the institution of marriage
—be content with what you have
Remember to follow good examples
—imitate the faith of good leaders
—be an example for others
Remember Jesus never changes
“Because Jesus Christ is the same, now is our turn to live as Christ’s people in a manner that would be recognizable to those who came before us. They will not accept the excuse that our times are different from theirs, nor should they. All times are different in some ways, but Jesus Christ is always the same.”
—Richard D. Phillips
Questions for discussion:
- Why do you think Jesus said the world will know we are his disciples if we love one another?
- How have you experienced and benefited from biblical hospitality and what keeps you from practicing it?
- What are some ways we can uphold and protect marriage?
- Why is being content with what we have so hard in our culture, and how can we become more content?
- Who are some of the best examples of faith you have known personally?
- In what ways does it help you to remember that Jesus never changes?
